Wrightwood plagued by flooding, mud and debris flows during powerful winter storm

A winter storm that delivered hours of rain on Christmas Eve produced flash flooding, mudslides and debris flows in the mountain community of Wrightwood.

Steady rain hammered the San Bernardino County town for hours Wednesday morning and into the afternoon, prompting law enforcement officers to conduct door-to-door checks on residents in some of the hardest hit areas. Residents in high-danger zones were advised to evacuate immediately with rain expected to continue Wednesday and into Christmas Day.

An evacuation warning was in effect from Pine Street to the Los Angeles County line. Later Wednesday afternoon, the sheriff’s department urged Wrightwood residents to shelter in place.

Fire crews reported several rescues involving people trapped in vehicles. Video showed road covered in several inches of water and mud.

An evacuation center was established at Serrano High School.

At an elevation of about 6,200 feet, Wrightwood is about 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles with a population of 4,700.
