Women's nonprofit to hold South Asian wedding-themed fundraiser Sunday

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Local nonprofit IDIA USA (Inspiring Divas in Austin) will hold what it says is the Austin area’s “first-ever Desi Wedding Inspired Fundraiser” Sunday evening.

The event, named “Shaadi Mubarak” (Hindi for “happy marriage”), will “recreate the magic of a South Asian wedding” without the social pressures that women often face at weddings, the group said.

“This event reimagines the traditional “shaadi” — or wedding — as a symbol of unity, joy, and cultural pride, not social pressure,” reads a press release from the nonprofit. “By creating a mock wedding experience, IDIAUSA invites the community to immerse themselves in the color, music, and magic of a South Asian wedding without the expectation, judgment, or gender bias often tied to marriage.”

The main event of the fundraiser is a “Big Fake Wedding Experience.” It’ll also include showcases of music, dance and fashion, as well as vendors and food from local South Asian restaurants.

The group said that the money raised at the event will fund its business mentorship for immigrant women, career development workshops, and wellness & community-building initiatives.

“It is an idea that grows out of a desire to build an empowering all-women community that would be a safe place for every woman,” reads the nonprofit’s about page.

IDIA USA said in its release that it hopes the event’s theme can also be a conversation starter about domestic violence, sexual assault and

The event will be held at the Round Rock Senior Center, which is located at 301 W Bagdad Ave. in Round Rock. It runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $20, with discounts for group purchases.
