A homicide investigation is underway after a woman’s body was found in a remote desert area of San Bernardino County, authorities said Monday.
Detectives with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department began looking into the case Sunday morning after a person called in about the body near Highway 395 and Buckthrone Canyon Road in the unincorporated area near Helendale in the Mojave Desert.
The caller told authorities he or she first thought it was a mannequin lying on a desert field. But when realizing what appeared to be a mannequin was a deceased person, the person reached out to police.
Investigators with the sheriff’s department arrived at the scene at around 7:10 a.m. Sunday and determined that the body, which may be that of a 38-year-old woman, had been buried in a shallow grave.
The deceased’s identity was not immediately available as officials awaited confirmation from the medical examiner’s office.
The sheriff’s department did not release any information about the suspect.
Anyone with information regarding this incident was urged to contact homicide investigators at 909-890-4904.
