Voters have decided who will succeed DFL Rep. Melissa Hortman, who was killed alongside her husband in a targeted assassination in June. MPR News says “Democratic candidate Xp Lee prevailed Tuesday in a pivotal special election to fill the seat … The outcome, called by The Associated Press not long after voting closed in the Brooklyn Park-area district, will return the House to a 67-67 tie between the parties.”

The city of Rochester risks job losses amid funding cuts. KTTC reports “the Trump administration has proposed major federal funding cuts for the National Institutes of Health from $48 billion down to $27.5 billion in 2026.” A nonpartisan research group estimates the cut could impact 300,000 health care related jobs nationwide, “including positions at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.”

Gov. Tim Walz has issued an executive order to combat fraud, KARE 11 reports “Walz has issued an executive order directing Minnesota state agencies to take additional steps to prevent fraud, including the creation of a new statewide Inspector General’s office.”

Bring Me The News says non-tribal marijuana sales are launching across the metro and the state. “Legacy Cannabis opened the state’s first non-tribal dispensary Tuesday in downtown Duluth, selling flower grown by the White Earth Nation.” The business is expected to come to the metro area soon.
