Water taxi proposal for LA28 between San Pedro and Long Beach moves forward

A proposal to operate a water taxi between San Pedro and Long Beach during the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games received a unanimous vote to move forward on Thursday by the Los Angeles Metro Board of Directors.

The author of the water taxi motion was Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahh, and it was co-authored by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Chair Fernanda Dutra, Jaquelyn Dupont-Walker, Inglewood Mayor James Butts and Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval.

“The 2028 Games are a chance to think bigger about the transit options we offer our residents,” said Hahn. “A water taxi between San Pedro and Long Beach would be an opportunity to showcase our waterfront, cut down on traffic on the bridges, and give residents and visitors a memorable way to get to Olympic and Paralympic events.”

With today’s vote, Hahn and co-authors are set to begin the process of identifying possible operators and assessing funding options.

Long Beach is scheduled to host at least 18 sports events across seven venues during the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A report by Metro revealed the water taxi proposal is “not only feasible but would also support the Games’ goal of a transit-first Olympics and Paralympics and work to mitigate concerns over roadway congestion and traffic flows during the games.”

The price per passenger could be as low as $4, according to the Metro’s report. Hahn said the water taxi would be integrated into the tap system.

The water taxi proposal would offer a connection for San Pedro and nearby communities, as well as riders along Metro’s J (Silver) Line.

The next meeting between Metro Staff and the Board will be in 180 days.
