Chicago’s Leo High School Choir rocked the America’s Got Talent semifinals Tuesday evening with a cover of “Centuries” by Fall Out Boy.
Made up of students from all-boys Catholic school Leo High School in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, the choir is one step away from performing in the show’s finale.
“Seeing the guys growing through this experience has been amazing,” said choir director Miss Hill, who has stayed by the choir’s side throughout their entire America’s Got Talent experience since their audition. “This is a special group of guys.”
The judges had many positive reviews for the performance.
“You guys literally tear at my heart strings because I can see how much this means to you,” judge Mel B said after their performance that she later called “brilliant.”
Judge Sofia Vergara said they “make being in a choir the most cool thing in the world.”
“I think this act might be the act that has progressed the most,” said judge Simon Cowell, who gave the boys a rare standing ovation their quarterfinal performance of “Believer” by Imagine Dragons.
Joining the chorus of positive feedback, judge Howie Mandel said the choir “checks every box.”
Choir member Keith “Kash” Smith said making it to the finals would “mean the world” to them.
“We got so many people in Chicago, all over America voting for us, cheering for us, we just want to make everbody proud,” Smith said.
Votes can be submitted here until 6 a.m. CT Wednesday.
The choir sent NBC Chicago a special message ahead of their performance in the semifinals.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson wished the boys choir good luck on social media before their performance Tuesday.
If they win, the members of the choir said they will use the prize money for college tuition.
