VIDEO: This San Francisco toothpick sculpture took 50+ years to create | Meet the artist who made it

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A replica of famous Bay Area landmarks was put together one toothpick at a time. In the latest episode of “15 with Justine,” host Justine Waldman meets artist Scott Weaver, a man of many (toothpick) hats, who has built his life’s work using only Elmer’s glue, Diamond toothpicks, and lots of patience.

And no, his work is not sponsored by either brand.

Weaver explains his “Rolling Through the Bay” sculpture — which is currently on exhibit at the Exploratorium — has been in the works since 1974. For decades, Weaver has been adding to the artwork to reflect the most up-to-date San Francisco skyline.

Weaver describes the process as “meditative,” saying “it’s not something you’re going to get instant gratification out of.”

When asked what the hardest part of the process was, Weaver explained, “it’s a millimeter between each toothpick, so you have to have a steady hand.” In addition to his giant San Francisco toothpick sculpture, Weaver showed off his other toothpick creations and handstand skills.
