A large fire burned at a south suburban junkyard on Saturday, sending flames and dark clouds of smoke into the air.
Footage shared with NBC Chicago showed numerous engulfed vehicles at the auto scrap yard located along Joe Orr Road near Western Avenue in Chicago Heights.
Videos showing clouds of smoke were posted on social media, with some users saying the smoke was visible miles away. A Chicago Heights Fire Department spokesman said the fire was only affecting auto salvage hulks and tires — and the burning tires were “producing abundant smoke.”
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters were working to contain the fire as of Saturday afternoon.
Information on what caused the fire wasn’t immediately available.
