Vehicle ‘left unattended' leads to crash that shut down Route 14 for hours

A driver was airlifted and another hospitalized in a harrowing crash that shut down part of Route 14 in a northwest Chicago suburb for hours Sunday.

The two-vehicle crash happened just after 5 p.m. on U.S. Route 14 near Lucas Road in Crystal Lake.

Authorities said an investigation found a Ford SUV was “left unattended” in the southeast-bound lanes, just north of Lucas Road. A Chevrolet SUV traveling in the same direction struck the rear of the Ford vehicle.

The driver of the Chevrolet SUV was airlifted to an area hospital for emergency treatment, police said, and a passenger was taken by ambulance. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to authorities.

Part of Route 14 was closed for three hours while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Police said the crash remained under investigation Monday. They’re asking for anyone who may have information to contact the Crystal Lake Police Department at (815) 356-3620 or text anonymously to 847411.
