Two people are back on dry land Saturday after being rescued from a sailboat off Harbor Beach in Oceanside, according to authorities.
Oceanside firefighters and lifeguards responded shortly after 6 p.m. Friday to a 38-foot sailboat that was caught in the surf line while attempting to enter Oceanside Harbor, fire officials said.
“The vessel encountered large breaking waves near the entrance, which quickly pushed it into the surf zone in front of Harbor Beach, placing both occupants in immediate danger,” Oceanside Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeremy Brandt said.
Two rescue swimmers were deployed and got the two boaters to safety despite challenging conditions, Brandt said. They were not injured.
The OFD Marine Safety Unit and lifeguards were working on recovering the boat Friday night.
“The Oceanside Fire Department reminds all boaters that wearing a life jacket is the single most effective way to improve survival in an emergency and encourages everyone to remain alert to changing surf and weather conditions when approaching the harbor,” Brandt said.
