Two people were found dead after a fire engulfed a home in Herndon, Virginia, early Thursday morning, the fire department says.
The home in the 1500 block of Shellbark Place was already up in flames when firefighters arrived about 7 a.m., the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department said. A neighbor made the 911 call to report the fire at the home, which is a block south of Dranesville Elementary School.
First responders found two people dead in the home after making their way inside.
Authorities haven’t identified the victims. Neighbors said they were a husband and wife who lived at the home.
“I saw our neighbors who live in this house next door were in a big hug and so, like, that’s kind of when I knew they didn’t make it. So that was really hard, so we were all crying,” neighbor Amanda Scoville said.
Neighbors told News4 the flames were taller than the house and the smoke was incredibly thick as firefighters moved through the home.
They said the couple was older but still working.
“They were very reserved, kept to themselves. So we didn’t know them a whole lot, but they were very pleasant,” Kathy Dunlap said.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
