Train derails in Affton, HAZMAT crews respond

AFFTON, Mo. – Four railcars derailed from a train Friday afternoon in Affton near Weber Road and New Hampshire Avenue.

Investigators say a BNSF train derailed around 4:18 p.m. Two derailed tanks ended up into resident’s backyards, prompting evacuations, according to the Fenton Fire Department.

“I stopped behind it and saw dust flick up in the air,” said Shayne Cronin, who witnessed the event. “People were still driving through it when the gates were closed.”

Drivers are asked to avoid the area, as crews work to investigate the derailment and clear the scene. Residents inside 10 homes near the tracks were evacuated, according to the Fenton Fire Department.

No injuries have been reported at this time. One of the derailed tanks that ended up nearby backyards contained sodium hydroxide solution.

No hazardous leaks have been reported and there is no danger to the public, according to officials.
