Three takeaways from Bears’ 52-21 loss to Lions, including ominous numbers on their future

DETROIT — It’s not just the Bears are 0-2 after the Lions blew them out 52-21 on Sunday. It’s that very little has looked close to being on the right track.

This loss was — incredibly — worse than the score indicated:

Insurmountable failures

The Bears’ mistakes were mountainous: D’Andre Swift fumbling in scoring territory, Caleb Williams coming up short on back-to-back quarterback sneaks and Williams throwing an inexcusable interception down the sideline.

Shaky defense

The Bears had no pass rush. The run defense got bullied. Wide receivers ran freely through the secondary. Perfect recipe for giving up 52 points.

Steep climb

At 0-2 with both losses in the NFC North, the Bears already are in trouble. All eight teams that opened with two losses, both in the division, since 2002 missed the playoffs. Since the postseason field expanded in 2020, just 5 of 41 that started 0-2 in any fashion made the playoffs.

Johnson’s former boss had just called a pass on fourth-and-goal from the 4 to go ahead by 33 points when the Ford Field faithful grew even more emboldened than Lions fans had been all Sunday afternoon.
When asked what corrections are most urgent in Williams’ own performance over the first games, in which he had an 89.1 passer rating and 61.5 completion percentage while the offense scored on 6 of 21 possessions, he downplayed that there were major concerns.
After the Bears’ 52-21 loss in Detroit, it’s safe to say theirs is a report card no one would want to bring home.
