'This guy needs to get found': Inside the search for an Austin murder suspect

AUSTIN (KXAN) — This week on Unsolved: Central Texas, Avery Travis sits down with three law enforcement officers for a full-circle look inside the search for murder suspect Kevin Michael Waguespack.

Waguespack left in 2017, days before he was set to stand trial for the murder of his girlfriend, Catherine Dyer. Eight years later, law enforcement across multiple states continue to search for Waguespack, who confessed in a 911 call to killing Dyer, according to court documents.

Det. Tara Dicken now leads the search for Waguespack with the Austin Police Department’s Tactical Intelligence Unit. Dicken said this case hits particularly close to home because Dyer’s murder was the first time she responded to a homicide scene when she was working as a patrol officer in 2015.

“This guy needs to get found,” Dicken said.

Sgt. Jonathan Riley from the Austin Police Department explained how learning about a fugitive’s patterns before they were on the run helps investigators predict their behavior after they flee.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Brandon Filla detailed how the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force works with local law enforcement across the country to help track down fugitives as they cross state lines.

Hear from all three law enforcement officials — each with their own unique perspective on the hunt for a fugitive — on this week’s episode of Unsolved: Central Texas.
