Surveillance video captured the moment a thief who posed as a customer at a Glendale clothing store escaped with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise.
The theft occurred at Qualité Los Angeles, a specialty shop offering high-end clothing brands and other accessories, located in Kenneth Village, a popular shopping and dining district.
On Nov. 7, surveillance cameras captured a young male suspect entering the shop and posing as an interested customer. He circled the small store and chatted with the store manager, Anthony Montes, asking questions about the items and shoe sizing.
He spent around 20 minutes in the store. He was browsing the hoodie section near the entrance when the store manager stepped into a backroom momentarily.
The second the manager was gone, the suspect quickly grabbed a rack full of luxury-branded hoodies and a Pikachu plush toy before running out of the store and into a waiting getaway car.
The manager said the thief escaped with around $10,000 worth of merchandise.
“He said that he was local and was building trust with me,” Montes told KTLA’s Chris Wolfe. “I try to show everyone here great customer service and we’re a new business. He just kept asking for sizes of different shoes. I went in the back for a split second and I heard the rustling of the plastic protectors for our clothes. I came back out and he was gone.”
Montes said the brazen theft was a surprise, especially as the store had only opened three months earlier and the area is known for being safe and family-friendly.
“It really sucks because the owner and I are working hard every day and trying to build a relationship with the community,” Montes said.
The suspect was described as a young Asian man, possibly 18 to 25 years old. He stands around 5 feet 8 inches tall, has a thin build and was wearing eyeglasses.
While the thief remains at large, the shop owner is concerned he will strike again.
Anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information on the case is asked to call the Glendale Police Department at 818-548-4911.
