ST. LOUIS – There’s a lot of history to St. Louis—especially The Fabulous Fox Theatre.
Behind the elaborate embellishments and decorations throughout the theatre, there are walls filled with it.
In 1983, singer and songwriter Tony Orlando took it upon himself to leave his mark after a show at the Fabulous Fox along the staircase on the second floor. And it turned into something much bigger.
What once were single signatures turned into crowded hallways, door frames, every corner filled with names who have taken the stage—or, worked behind the stage—to the point that it can be easy to miss some of the big names.
Over time, small signatures led to murals for every touring show that makes a stop in the Gateway City. While some may be smaller, others, like “Wicked” take up an entire wall. One of the most common ways the show designers incorporate some St. Louis flair is, of course, adding in The Arch wherever possible.
According to staff at the theatre, there is no preservation method they use along the walls. Some associates do have a manual note-taking system to keep track of every signature backstage and when it was signed.
