A suburban police department shared a reminder about self-driving features after a squad vehicle was struck by a car operating in autopilot mode, authorities said.
The South Barrington Police Department said on Oct. 15, a Tesla was being operated in autopilot mode when it struck a department patrol vehicle. The driver admitted to falling asleep while the vehicle was on autopilot and subsequently arrested on several violations, authorities said.
Two officers were involved but weren’t injured in the crash, police stated. The collision is being investigated by the Barrington Hills Police Department.
Following the incident, South Barrington reminded drivers that while vehicle automation systems aren’t illegal, they don’t replace the need for human attention and judgment behind the wheel.
“Technology continues to evolve and can enhance safety when used properly,” Deputy Chief Adam Puralewski said in the Facebook post. “However, it’s important to remember that drivers are still responsible for the safe operation of their vehicles at all times.”
