Someone stole a Clear Creek County shuttle bus that was parked in Georgetown on Friday afternoon and took it on a joyride on Interstate 70, speeding through a crash scene and nearly hitting emergency workers in the road.
Officers were responding to a single-vehicle crash on eastbound I-70 near mile 241, just outside of Idaho Springs, when the stolen Roundabout bus crashed into a police car at the scene, the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office said at 12:40 p.m.
Body-worn camera footage shared by the Idaho Springs Police Department shows the bus speeding past stopped traffic on the shoulder and through the crash scene, hitting the police cruiser and nearly hitting officers and EMTs on scene.
Police found the bus abandoned in Denver as of 1:20 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
The crash caused an extensive backup on eastbound I-70 before all lanes of the highway were cleared at 1:35 p.m., the agency said.
Investigators did not have any information about the suspect as of Friday evening. Anyone with information can contact the sheriff’s office at crime_tips@clearcreeksheriff.us.
