Step into the world of 'Wicked' in Coronado for the holidays

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The holidays are just around the corner and what better way to celebrate than to step into the magical world of “Wicked” and the Wizard of Oz right here in San Diego County.

Visitors looking for the yellow brick road can head to the Hotel del Coronado and experience the new “Tinsel Trail to Oz.”

Starting Nov. 21, the Hotel Del will be transformed into a holiday-themed experience where people can meet the iconic characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the book authored by L. Frank Baum.

The book inspired the beloved Broadway musical “Wicked” and its star-studded movie adaptation starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, plus its upcoming sequel “Wicked: For Good,” which is set to debut in theaters on the same day as the Hotel Del’s celebration.

Baum was a frequent visitor at The Del between 1904 and 1917, and reportedly used the hotel’s castle-like architecture and sweeping oceanfront views as inspiration for his creative works.

Highlights of the Tinsel Trail to Oz include a two-story tree in the Hotel Del’s Victorian Lobby, which will be decorated with 10,000 lights and 2,000 ornaments, plus a glowing “yellow brick road” in the garden courtyard.

The yellow brick road is where guests can visit with Dorothy and her friends, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow. Plus, people ages 21 and over can sip cocktails from the Emerald Bar, which will be open every weekend from Nov. 21 until Jan 1.
