Shelter-in-place lifted after chemical mix-up prompts hazmat call in Spring Valley

A shelter-in-place order was issued Monday afternoon in the Spring Valley area due to a hazmat incident that caused a gas cloud, officials said.

The order was issued at around 11 a.m. after the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department received a call from a company on 10600 Jamacha Boulevard that “accidentally mixed two chemicals incorrectly and a gas cloud formed,” a Sheriff’s spokesperson said.

During the shelter-in-place order, which was lifted just before 2 p.m., residents within the boundaries were asked to remain indoors with shut and locked doors and windows.

No official evacuation order was issued, but the incident did cause the sheriff’s department to go door-to-door to evacuate some businesses and residents.

Video from SkyRanger 7 showed what appeared to be a group of workers outside Caliber Collision, an auto repair shop, although it was unclear if that’s where the hazardous materials incident occurred.

At least one person appeared to be receiving medical attention and an ambulance could be seen arriving at the scene. It was not immediately clear if anyone was transported for injuries.

The shelter-in-place order was activate within the following boundaries before it was lifted just before 2 p.m.:

  • Zone ID: SDC-2153
    • NORTH OF Via Lampara
    • SOUTH OF Jamacha Boulevard, Trace Road
    • EAST OF Jamacha Boulevard, 10th Street
    • WEST OF Wagon Wheel Court

The following streets were also previously closed, according to Genasys Protect:

  • Sweetwater Springs Blvd
  • Rolex Street
The shelter-in-place order above was lifted before 2 p.m. on Monday.
