A man convicted of exposing himself and committing lewd acts in front of female students at UC San Diego and San Diego State University has been sentenced to three years in county jail.
Adrian Haywood, 33, dubbed the “SDSU Gooner” in online circles, was found guilty for a string of sexually explicit incidents at university campuses, plus “a workplace incident involving a female colleague,” according to the San Diego City Attorney’s Office.
” ‘Gooning’ is a state into which one gets when one is highly aroused,” according to the Urban Dictionary, which also said it is typically used in reference to male behavior.
Haywood was convicted last month of six counts of indecent exposure, lewd conduct and sexual battery. He was sentenced to six months in jail on each count, to be served consecutively for the three-year total term.
Along with custody, he will have to register as a sex offender.
“[This case and another NBC 7 covered] underscore my office’s commitment to prosecuting conduct that threatens the safety and dignity of women and of our entire communities,” City Attorney Heather Ferbert is quoted as saying in a news release sent out Thursday. “We will continue to use every tool available to address harassing and abusive behavior, support victims and survivors, and bring offenders to justice.”
The city attorney’s office said Haywood is also facing a separate indecent exposure case in El Cajon, for which he has a pending mental health diversion. According to prosecutors, he also has a pair of prior convictions in Texas.
Haywood will be required to register as a sex offender, the city attorney’s office said.
