Scandal-ridden San Mateo County sheriff retires after board fires her

(KRON) — Ousted San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus retired the same day the board of supervisors voted unanimously to fire her. According to the San Mateo County Employees Retirement Association, Tuesday was Corpus’ last day of employment with the county.

The former sheriff’s retirement was effective as of Wednesday and as a retired employee, she will be entitled to benefits, according to county officials.

Corpus was removed from office on Tuesday following a vote during a special meeting of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. Tuesday’s vote followed months of scandal.

Allegations of harassment, racial and homophobic abuse, and having an inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff dogged Corpus tenure as sheriff. Despite calls for her to resign, Corpus remained defiant.

However, earlier this month, a retired Santa Clara County Superior Court judge submitted an advisory report supporting four independent bases for removing her from office. That report seemingly paved the way for Tuesday’s vote in which all five board members voted to fire her.

According to county officials, Corpus’ ouster will not impact her benefit eligibility.

Following Corpus’ ouster, San Mateo County Undersheriff Dan Perea will serve as interim sheriff until voters are given the opportunity to elect a new sheriff.
