Sanders to undergo surgery, won't miss any time with team

DENVER (KDVR) — University of Colorado Boulder football coach Deion Sanders announced in a press conference on Tuesday morning that he is having surgery later in the day, but doesn’t plan to miss any time with his team.

Following the Buffs’ last game against TCU on Saturday, Coach Prime said he was “hurting like crazy” and believed that another stint with blood clots was the cause. He was seen sitting and limping at times during the game.

He has a previous history of blood clots and had to have two toes amputated because of it.

Sanders did not name the procedure he is undergoing.

“I don’t even know the name of it or the title of it — I know it’s long,” said Sanders. “I’m having a procedure today. Preferably, I’ll be right back tomorrow because I don’t miss practice. I don’t plan on doing such.”

While he did not name the procedure, he did give an indirect confirmation that it is related to blood clots.

“It is what it is. We found what we found. We knew what it was,” said Sanders. “I have a wonderful team of doctors at UCHealth, and a wonderful team of trainers here, to ensure my health.”

FOX31 reached out to the university for a diagnosis and the name of the procedure. A spokesperson from the school stated that Sanders is undergoing an aspiration thrombectomy of the left popliteal and tibial arteries, which is related to blood clots.

He said he has received many well-wishes, accompanied by questions about how hard he works. Coach Prime said that his ability to perform and get his team to the point of being as competitive as they can be isn’t to blame.

It’s something hereditary, Sanders said.

“UCHealth takes care of me. I can’t wait to go get past this hurdle,” said Sanders. “Thank you for your well wishes, your sentiments. Everybody out there, I appreciate y’all.

His final words before leaving the press conference paid homage to those of Kendrick Lamar.

“I love you all, and I’m gon be alright,” said Sanders.
