San Diego arts community to receive $15M in grants

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — More than 60 San Diego arts and culture organizations are receiving over $15 million in emergency grants to protect the arts community.

On Wednesday, the Prebys Foundation announced it is awarding the emergency funding to protect San Diego’s art scene from federal and state funding cuts, local budget shortfalls, aas well as donor fatigue and inflation.

City leaders are raising concerns about the impact the loss of programming and venues could have on San Diego’s cultural eco system and economy without immediate action.

“The arts are not a luxury. They are essential infrastructure for a thriving, equitable, and prosperous region,” said Prebys Foundation CEO Grant Oliphant.

“This funding is a critical vote of confidence in the importance of values-based work by cultural institutions throughout San Diego County during this tenuous time of historical erasure,” added Micah Parzen, CEO of the Museum of Us.

More than $8.6 million in unrestricted operating support is being distributed between 22 organizations, including the La Jolla Playhouse, the San Diego Museum of Art, the San Diego Symphony, and The Old Globe.

Nearly $5 million in venues and spaces grants will go to 39 organizations, including the MOXIE Theater, the Spreckels Organ Society, and the Cygnet Theater Company.

This funding will help venues stay open and preserve accessible places for creativity within the community.
