Protestors gather outside migrant detention center in Deerfield Beach on Christmas Day

On Christmas Day, outside the Broward Transitional Center in Deerfield Beach is when and where immigration protesters made their statement.

“I think we need to be here for these people, show them that we care about them,” said one woman.

Her husband was right next to her.

“We are having roofs put on where we live, and half of the people did not show up because they are afraid of getting deported,” he said.

The transitional center houses migrants who have been arrested.

About 20 people stood outside the facility with signs in hand.

One read “this is not normal,” and another read “abolish ICE immediately.”

For some of the protestors the event is a regularly scheduled gathering.

“Usually, we come here every other Sunday, I think it’s 1 to 2,” said one woman.

A BSO deputy greeted the crowd, urging them to protest within the rules, like not obstructing the public right of way and no use of devices to amplify their voices.

Some are part of the group dubbed the 50501 Movement, an online effort urging 50 protests in 50 states on one day.

It happened on Feb. 5, and many activists have continued since then.

“I have been protesting many things in my life, I am a senior, senior,” said one woman. “And I have to say, it takes a long time, but it works. It works and I am very, very hopeful that we’ll save some people in there.”
