Preparing your home against pest migration this fall

ST. LOUIS – While it’s still warm outside, it won’t be long before critters and insects start trying to escape the colder weather by coming into your home.

Joshua Paske of Paske Pest Control and Wildlife Solutions says they’re already getting calls about the fall pest migration indoors.

“Spiders are coming in, stinkbugs you‘re going to see. Stink bugs are coming in. So make sure you have all of your gaps closed. Usually around doors and windows, windows at the bottom. They’re going to crawl in. They’re wall chasers, they’re going to come in from the yard, do a perimeter search, looking for that empty hole,” Paske said.

Squirrels, racoons, mice and even snakes are all culprits of unsolicited visits into your home.

“They’re chasing food source. So it’s not uncommon to find in an older home snake sheds in the attic. They’re working their way through the bone structure of a home. And they get in they’re usually not getting back out,” he said. “At ground level they’ll get in behind the siding and tuck their way in. If there’s a gap, again, same thing with rodent’s they’re just trying to get in and get away from the weather.”

Paske says the goal is to make your home as strong as possible by closing any gaps.

“There are just things you can do, there’s certain caulk that you can buy. You can use foam backing you can use all kinds of things to try to shut that down,” Paske said.

Sided houses have more opportunities for things to break in since there are more seams.

“I would tell you get mosquito service which is a power sprayer from the ground to the roof line. That’s going to allow to make sure that bugs don’t enter even at the GPC. Which is general pest control level which is all done at the base,” Paske said. “That’ll take care of anything creepy crawly that’s walking in the door in this market.”

There are also devices you can buy to install around your dryer vents and other roof ventilation. You want to make sure those devices are used properly and meet compliance, so you don’t cause a bigger issue.
