Police shoot, kill man armed with knives in Northwest DC

D.C. police officers shot and killed a man in Northwest D.C. Tuesday afternoon, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Two officers responded to a domestic disturbance report in the 5100 block of Sherier Place NW about 11 a.m., but the suspect had left the area, police said.

After noon, the officers were interviewing people for their report when the man returned armed with two knives and ran toward the officers, police said.

After the suspect ignored orders to drop the knives, officers used tasers at least twice to attempt to stop him, police said, but the tasers did not appear to affect him and he continued to approach.

Officers continued attempts to deescalate the situation, police said, but the suspect did not drop the knives.

The two officers on the scene fired their weapons at the suspect, hitting him at least once, police said.

“This certainly was a situation where we had to keep our cool and use our best tactics, and we did,” Executive Assistant Chief of Police Andre Wright said.

D.C. Fire and EMS went to the location to treat the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. He was identified as 31-year-old Jonathan Boruch, of North Bethesda, Maryland.

No officers were injured in the incident, nor was anyone else.

Pictures police shared of the two knives showed blood, but police did not say what the source of the blood was.

Wright could not say whether Boruch had a history of mental health issues but described his behavior as “erratic and illogical.”

The scene is near the Palisades Recreation Center, which includes a playground.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave.
