Police Blotter: Waltham man gets 14 years for ‘reign of terror’ assaults

A Waltham man was sentenced to 14 years in state prison for a series of “unprovoked attacks” on 12 male victims, including a mail carrier, in November 2020.

Clauvens Janvier, 29, was initially arrested on Dec. 11, 2020, in connection with an attack one month earlier on a single victim in a parking garage on Turner Street in Waltham. Authorities say he struck the man with the non-blade side of the machete. Following this arrest, however, further investigation connected him to attacks on 11 other male victims.

Upon Janvier getting charged with a total of 11 victims — another one would later — in May 2021 Middlesex DA Marian Ryan said she was excited for city residents that his “reign of terror” had come to an end.

That terror included an assault on a U.D. Postal Service mail carrier, multiple instances of his victims losing consciousness and requiring hospitalization, and even shooting at a motor vehicle leaving a Willow Street gas station after Janvier had gotten into a verbal altercation with the driver in the parking lot on Nov. 24, 2020.

A Middlesex Superior Court jury convicted Janvier on multiple firearms charges related to that last incident. Earlier this week, Clauvens pleaded guilty to charges related to the other 11 assaults, which included various assault and battery and weapons charges.

A true bed bug

The Fall River Police Department confirmed they weren’t “sleeping on it” when about 50 mattresses were found scattered around an industrial park in the city on Innovation Way just before Christmas.

“Thanks to the outstanding investigative work of Officer William Medeiros, Officer Matthew Belben, and Officer Kris Sousa, this case did not get brushed aside or ‘slept on,’” the Fall River PD wrote on Facebook.

Hemson Etienne, who the police said was hired by a local hotel undergoing renovations, was charged locally with illegally dumping the mattresses and the city will be seeking restitution for the labor and costs associated with removing the mattresses.

“Before hiring someone to get rid of bulky items, do a little homework. If the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” the PD wrote, “and there’s a decent chance your old mattress is about to become someone else’s roadside problem.”
