Pilot flies girl, mom home to Minnesota for the holidays after surgery in Del.

A little girl coming off a major surgery will be back at home for the holidays thanks to a local organization and a goodhearted volunteer.

Early on Thursday morning, John Solt was preparing his airplane to welcome aboard a daughter and a mother to help them get home to Minnesota for Thanksgiving.

Last week, Miranda Adams drove her daughter Madeline to Nemours Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, for a major surgery.

“She has a very rare form of skeletal dysplasia and had a very serious spinal compression. We went to get that repaired and we got a halo placed,” Miranda explained.

A social worker at Nemours told the mom and daughter that she had a way to get them home and connected them to Angel Flight East.

Insurance doesn’t pay to get families to and from far away medical trips, so Angel Flight East steps in.

Pilot Solt and his wife say that they are happy to pay for the plane and the fuel to make trips like this a possibility.

“Aviation has been part of my life for forty years,” Solt explained. “I have always felt that aviation is a gift and there are very few people that can share this gift with others.”

Solt and his team flew Madeline and her mom to Wisconsin where another pilot will pick them to take them the rest of the way to Minnesota.

“It is really important for us to be home to spend time with our family over the holidays,” Madeline’s mom said. “We are just gonna continue recovering.”

Madeline will have to wear the new halo for the next four months, her mom said.
