A homicide suspect — who was released from prison several years ago after his 2015 murder conviction was overturned due to its connection to a disgraced detective — was shot and stabbed by another man over the weekend, Philadelphia police said.
Arkel Garcia, 32, was wanted by police for allegedly killing 68-year-old David Weinkopff back on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025, in Philadelphia. Weinkopff was found dead inside an apartment along the 4900 block of Stenton Avenue. Investigators said he died from blunt force trauma. Garcia was identified as the suspect in the murder.
Then on Dec. 19, 2025, the U.S. Marshals announced Garcia was also the suspect in the murder of 51-year-old Antwan Daniels in Fort Pierce, Florida.
Garcia remained on the run until Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, when police responded to a report of a shooting at a retail store parking lot along the 5200 block of Germantown Avenue. When they arrived, they found Garcia on the ground suffering from gunshot and stab wounds.
Police then interviewed a 37-year-old man who told them Garcia had shot a 34-year-old man during an altercation inside a building at the location. The 37-year-old man said he struck and stabbed Garcia while trying to protect others and then struggled with Garcia over his gun. During the struggle, he shot Garcia at least once, according to investigators.
Garcia was taken to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The 34-year-old man was listed in stable condition. The 37-year-old man has not been charged.
On Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, the U.S. Marshals announced that Garcia was officially arrested in connection to Weinkopff’s murder. He remains at the hospital in critical condition.
Garcia involved in ‘Beats by Dre’ murder
In 2015, Garcia was sentenced to life in prison for shooting and killing 21-year-old Christian Massey back in November 2013. Before he died, Massey told police that a man – later identified as Garcia – had grabbed his ‘Beats by Dre’ headphones and then shot him as he tried to grab them back.
In 2021, six years after his sentencing, Garcia’s conviction was overturned due to its connection to disgraced Philadelphia Police Detective Philip Nordo, a law enforcement source confirmed with NBC10. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office helped overturn Garcia’s conviction after prosecutors determined Nordo had obtained a false confession from Garcia while trying to have sexual relationships with two other key witnesses.
In 2022, Nordo was sentenced to decades in prison for sexually assaulting witnesses and informants. Nordo was a 20-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department before he was fired in 2017.

A 2019 grand jury report alleged Nordo “groomed” his male victims during ongoing investigations and engaged in conduct to make the men “more susceptible to his sexually assaultive and/or coercive behavior.” His conviction compromised “dozens” of cases and led to multiple exonerations, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said at the time.
NBC10 reached out to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office for comment on Garcia’s most recent arrest. We will include a statement once we receive one.
