The Las Vegas Raiders continue to cycle through head coaches.
Pete Carroll was the latest to be one-and-done for the Silver and Black, with the team firing 74-year-old coach after going 3-14 in his lone season. The team confirmed the decision Monday morning.
“Moving forward, General Manager John Spytek will lead all football operations in close collaboration with Tom Brady, including the search for the club’s next head coach,” the team said in a statement.
The former Super Bowl winner was always expected to be a short-term coach in Las Vegas given his age, but this season certainly didn’t go as planned. After winning their opening game against the Patriots in New England, the Raiders dropped 14 of their final 16 games — including 10 straight before their Week 18 win.
In Carroll’s final game, the Raiders beat the Kansas City Chiefs 14-12 but still secured the No. 1 pick due to the New York Giants‘ earlier loss.
The Raiders will now move on to their fourth new coach in as many seasons. Jon Gruden resigned in the middle of the 2021 season before interim coach Rich Bisaccia led them to the postseason. Josh McDaniels was hired in 2022 but was quickly let go during the 2023 season, making way for Antonio Pierce. The interim head coach was given the full-time job in 2024, only to be fired after going 4-13 with Carroll then taking over.
Since their last playoff appearance in 2022, the Raiders are 21-46. The franchise hasn’t had a coach last four seasons since Gruden’s original stint from 1998 to 2001. Since then, the team has had 14 head coaches (including interims) in 24 years — with 10 lasting two seasons or fewer.
Prior to his brief stint in Las Vegas, Carroll had immense success in Seattle as the Seahawks’ head coach. He went 137-89-1 in 14 seasons (2010-2023), making the postseason 10 times with two Super Bowl appearances and one win. He also thrived as a college coach at USC, going 97-19 in nine seasons (2001-2009).
Moving forward, the Raiders could be one of the key players in the 2026 offseason. Brady, a minority owner, now has a larger voice in the operation, the team has the most projected cap space in the NFL and the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. With Geno Smith and Kenny Pickett at quarterback, Las Vegas is likely to add a new signal-caller at the top of the draft.
The Raiders are the fifth team to move on from their head coach this season, joining the Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns.
