Person struck and killed by Amtrak train near University Park

An individual was struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train Thursday morning in suburban University Park.

According to conductors onboard the train, the individual was riding a bike near the intersection of Governor’s Highway and Stuenkel Road and attempted to cross the tracks near the University Park Metra station just before 8 a.m. local time.

The inbound City of New Orleans train, heading northward toward Chicago’s Union Station, hit the individual and applied its emergency brakes, according to crew.

The individual was pronounced dead on the scene.

An investigation is underway, and the train is stopped near the station. University Park police are on scene, along with Amtrak personnel.

In a statement, Amtrak confirmed there were no injuries reported to the 225 passengers or to the crew onboard the train. The agency said it will work with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.

Metra service is unaffected by the collision, the agency told NBC Chicago.

We will update this story with additional details as they become available.
