Person killed on National Mall as crew delivered race car painted by Andy Warhol

One person was killed in an apparent workplace accident on the National Mall as a crew delivered a 1979 “art car” painted by Andy Warhol.

D.C. emergency crews were called to 12th Street between Jefferson and Madison drives, east of the Washington Monument, at about 3 p.m. Wednesday and found a person critically injured in a box truck, authorities told News4.

Medics treated the injured person, who was pronounced dead. Their name was not immediately released. D.C. police are taking over the investigation and had detectives headed to the scene.

News4 is working to learn more about what happened.

The Hagerty Drivers Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to car culture and history, is hosting its annual “Cars at the Capital” exhibition. The 1979 BMW M1 painted by Warhol was set to be on display on the Mall in a glass enclosure through Sept. 23.
