BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Peace Bridge and Lewiston-Queenston Bridge going into Canada have both reopened to all commercial traffic on Tuesday morning, and traffic backups have finally cleared.
The backups were due to a nationwide Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) computer outage for cargo systems, said Thomas Boyle, the CEO of the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority.
Trucks were stuck on the Peace Bridge for hours overnight and were backed up over the bridge, around the exit and onto I-190. Trucks were also backed up at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and filled up all three lanes of I-190.
The CBSA said the outage has been partially resolved, allowing most shipment processing to proceed, but there is still no known timing of a full resolution.
“Primary inspection lanes (PIL) at Peace Bridge and Queenston-Lewiston bridge have been staffed with officers to process traffic and shipments,” the CBSA said. “We are actively working with our partners at the Peace Bridge Authority and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission to assist with traffic control.”
NITTEC, the New York State Department of Transportation, the New York State Thruway Authority, New York State Police and border operators responded to the traffic congestion.
