PCSO: Teen fugitives arrested in Pueblo apartment after weeks on the run

(PUEBLO, Colo) — Two teenage boys who allegedly escaped from a Colorado Springs youth detention facility back in September were caught in Pueblo overnight on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), which is part of the U.S. Marshals Task Force, teamed up with other Task Force officers from the surrounding area, along with Deputy U.S. Marshals, to arrest Dameron Carbajal and Cristian Jaramillo, both 17, on Wednesday.

According to PCSO, just after 12 a.m., the team of law enforcement went to an apartment in the 1000 block of West 13th Street, which is located in Pueblo’s Northside, west of Mineral Palace Park, after receiving information that the two teenage fugitives from Pueblo were inside.

The two had been on the run since Sept. 22 after they were seen on video walking away from the Spring Creek Youth Services Center.

When law enforcement arrived at the apartment, they announced their presence and told those inside to remain indoors. According to PCSO, several people tried to escape through a window, but officers maintained a secure perimeter and requested additional units to help in securing the area.

Just before 12:30 a.m., officers entered the apartment and arrested Carbajal and Jaramillo without incident.

According to deputies, Carbajal was serving a five-year sentence for attempted murder, and Jaramillo was serving a four-year sentence for felony kidnapping, both out of Pueblo County. They were also wanted on no-bond warrants for escape from custody. Both teens have since been booked into the Pueblo Youth Services Center.

According to deputies, several other people were found inside the apartment, and according to the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), 22-year-old Dylan Vanluven was taken into custody on two felony warrants for Fugitive of Justice, and Guadalupe Valdez, 38, was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant for Failure to Appear – Possession of a Controlled Substance. Both suspects have since been booked into the Pueblo County Jail.

“During a protective sweep of the apartment, detectives observed firearms, ammunition, and suspected narcotics in plain view,” according to the press release.

PCSO listed the following items seized by detectives:

  • Three Glock handguns with extended magazines – one modified to be fully automatic
  • An AR-style rifle with a high-capacity magazine
  • Additional firearms
  • An open safe containing suspected narcotics, a large amount of cash, digital scales, and other items consistent with drug distribution

According to PCSO, the sheriff’s office will handle the ongoing criminal investigation related to the guns and narcotics found, as well as the harboring of the wanted teens.

“This was a coordinated and professional effort by our PCSO detectives, Deputy U.S. Marshals and partner agencies,” said Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero. “Because of their teamwork, two wanted escapees were safely taken back into custody, and additional criminal activity was uncovered that will be pursued through further investigation.”

U.S. Marshal for Colorado Kirk M. Taylor added, “My team of Deputy Marshals worked incredibly hard to capture these two fugitives. We could not have done it without the help and support of the Task Force Officers and both the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office and the Pueblo Police Department.”
