SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — OpenAI’s recently released Sora video app has topped one million downloads in just five days. That’s even faster than the company’s popular chatbot app ChatGPT did, despite Sora being invitation-only from the Apple App Store in North America exclusively.
According to Bill Peebles, OpenAI’s Head of Sora, the Sora team is “working hard to keep up with surging growth,” adding, “more features and fixes to overmoderation on the way!”
The video-generating app was launched for iOS on Sept. 30, enabling users to scroll through a feed of AI-generated videos and to create their own with OpenAI’s Sora 2 model. The app also boasts a “cameo” feature that allows users to insert themselves into AI videos.
However, the app has led to copyright issues with videos on the app featuring copyright-protected characters and intellectual property being featured in non-brand-safe circumstances. This prompted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to make an announcement that rightsholders would be able to opt in or out of allowing their characters to be used in what he describes as a new kind of “interactive fan fiction.”
Currently, Sora is the top app in the Apple App Store.
