Oceanside school district announces support for Prop 50

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — In a unanimous vote, the Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) voted to support California Proposition 50 on Tuesday.

Less than a month away from the November Special Election, district leaders discussed the resolution in a recent school board meeting. The board cited cuts in federal funding, cuts to Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs and increased immigration enforcement as to why they “strongly” support Prop 50.

“These recent federal actions have created fear, instability, and barriers to student learning due to fiscal instability and the ongoing threat of immigration enforcement at or near schools,” the board stated in their resolution

Prop 50, or the Election Rigging Response Act, is California’s proposed plan to temporarily redistrict five congressional seats with a democratic majority in response to Texas’s redistricting.

Oceanside’s school district joins the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD), who voted to support redistricting last month. SDUSD cited similar concerns regarding the federal government when making their decision.

“Federal administration has canceled hundreds of millions of dollars in multiple education grants, including those allocated to Oceanside Unified District to support the recruitment and retention of a highly qualified, diverse educator workforce,” OUSD said.

In June, the Trump administration froze more than $6 billion in federal education funds. While much funding has returned to schools following a lawsuit against the Trump administration, OUSD said this would have cut $8.6 million for Oceanside.

“Proposition 50 will shape California’s congressional representation and its ability to defend public education and secure the critical resources students need during a time of heightened federal threats,” the board stated.

Registered voters can now vote at drop boxes across the county or vote by mail. To find a drop box near you, residents can visit the Official Ballot Drop Box Location Finder. Voters may also vote in-person on Nov. 4.
