NYC school adds security after 10th-grader's alleged threat yields a loaded gun

The 10th-grader arrested after allegedly being found with a loaded gun following an Instagram report about a potential threat to his New York City high school now faces terror- and weapons-related charges.

The student, who has not been identified was charged with making terroristic threats and criminal possession of a weapon in the Cardozo High School case, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Friday.

He was taken into custody when the NYPD found a loaded semi-automatic weapon, and 13 rounds of ammunition, in his backpack after Instagram reported a school shooting threat.

The student posted a photo of a school assignment he had been working on in a classroom, along with the words “boutta shoot the school up.”

Cardozo High School in Bayside didn’t have scanners as part of its security screening. It does now, Tisch said.

The police commissioner also said additional NYPD officers had been assigned to Cardozo and would remain there for the foreseeable future.

Investigators, meanwhile, conducted a consented search of the teenager’s home. They found two additional bullets, Tisch said. Detectives also learned the gun allegedly found in the boy’s backpack had been legally purchased by a permit holder from South Carolina in January 2025. That part of the investigation is ongoing.
