Niagara Falls woman dies in Erie County Holding Center

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Niagara Falls woman died on Friday after she was booked into the Erie County Holding Center, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office said.

Elizabeth Calaty, 35, was booked at 10:45 a.m. after she appeared in Buffalo City Court. Officials said two hours before her booking, she was taken into custody on an arrest warrant for petit larceny.

After Calaty completed her intake process, it was decided she would be put on detox observation, but at 11:45 p.m., she reportedly refused a medical visit.

At 8:15 a.m. on Sept. 20, a nurse and deputy found Calaty in her cell unresponsive with no pulse, officials said. There were no obvious signs of trauma, according to the sheriff’s office, and no contraband was found.

An autopsy was conducted on Monday. Calaty’s cause of death is yet to be determined as officials wait for toxicology reports.

The New York State Commission of Correction and the Office of the New York State Attorney General have both been notified. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is working with state’s Office of Special Investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing.
