As the New World School of the Arts (NWSA) approaches its 40th anniversary, the high school and college are committed to its mission of providing talented students with high quality education, New World school officials say.
The best professional training in the arts and access to unique opportunities to network with industry professionals is always a top priority, said Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, NWSA’s provost and CEO.
“We’ve continued to strengthen the impact of our curriculum through outstanding visiting artists, many of whom are our own alumni. Robert Battle, former artistic director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, last year created a new piece of choreography for NWSA high school dance students,” he said, “and this year he returns to develop a new work with NWSA college dancers. In the music department we’ve also added a jazz minor, available to our Bachelor of Music degree students.”
One of the most visible examples is a project New World launched last year, he said.
“When you see the annual Miami Book Fair poster, the winning design you’re enjoying is the result of a class project by NWSA college graphic design students,” Dr. Hodgson explained. “And with over 60 performances and exhibitions this academic year, NWSA students can be seen performing throughout South Florida, including at MDC Wolfson Campus, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, and the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater.”
In addition, this December NWSA students will participate in Miami Art week at the Untitled Art Fair in Miami Beach. The booth, featuring visual arts students and faculty, will serve as a gallery, discussion space, and innovative classroom, encouraging attendees to engage in meaningful conversations about the sustainability and development of artistic and community networks. NWSA also partners with Dance Now! Miami to present the Daniel Lewis Dance Sampler annually and with Armour Dance Theater on an annual Nutcracker.
“Theater high school students benefit from a partnership with GableStage as well,” Dr. Hodgson added. “Their Ignite program gives NWSA theater students the opportunity to read all season scripts, attend GableStage productions, and participate in hands-on workshops led by professional actors, designers, and technical artists. See the stars of tomorrow here first at NWSA!”
