Neighbors woken by screams as fire tears through camper and 2 homes in Jefferson County

LITTLETON, Colo. (KDVR) — Neighbors say screams for help woke them early Tuesday morning as flames tore through a camper trailer parked between two homes on South Kendall Boulevard in Jefferson County.

One person was taken to the hospital as nearly 70 firefighters worked to contain the flames that spread to both houses.

A man who was working as a contractor in the neighborhood told FOX31 he heard the screams and ran toward the trailer to try to help. He says the flames were too intense to reach the person inside, and he called 911. The contractor says he saw the person covered in flames before firefighters arrived.

South Metro Fire crews arrived in the area around 11 Tuesday morning to find a camper trailer fully engulfed and flames spreading to both sides.

“When we arrived on scene, we found active flames outside and fire was within a trailer that extended to a home to the north and a home to the south,” said Brian Willie, South Metro Fire Rescue public information officer.

The fire burned through the attic of the home to the north, breaking through the roof before crews could knock it down.

“The fire extended into the attic of the house, fire house at 7991 South Kendall Boulevard. And that did receive the most fire damage,” Willie said.

Everyone inside made it out. One occupant was transported emergently to a local hospital. Nearly 70 firefighters from multiple agencies helped contain the flames in under 30 minutes.

“This call was upgraded to a second alarm fire because there were two homes involved and the amount of fire with the first arriving crews on scene,” said Willie.

Both homes and the trailer were damaged as investigators searched for what sparked the flames. Fire investigators are still working to learn if foul play was involved, as the cause is still being investigated.
