NBC 7's Monica Dean, Mary Ellen Eagleston recognized for journalistic excellence

NBC 7 anchor Monica Dean has been named to the Silver Circle by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Pacific Southwest chapter.

The award is given to journalists with 25 or more years in the business who have contributed significantly to television and to the community.

Mary Ellen Eagleston, a production operator at NBC 7, also was honored with the award.

“This year’s inductees embody the best of television excellence and community impact in our region,” said DJ Summitt, president of NATAS Pacific Southwest. “Their careers have informed, inspired and elevated audiences for decades, while also giving back generously through volunteerism and mentorship.”

Dean is a multiple-Emmy award-winning anchor of NBC 7’s 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. newscasts. She is also the station’s streaming anchor, hosting and reporting multiple special reports for NBC San Diego News. Dean began her career at KTTV Los Angeles before joining NBC 7 in 2004.

Eagelston is a veteran technical professional with 27 years at NBC 7. She is expert across a wide range of broadcast operations and now works on NBC 7 News Today.

Several other journalists from NATAS Southwest were inducted into the Silver Circle as well: Marcella Lee of CBS 8; Ena Newell, who worked for KPBS and serves as executive director of NATAS-PSW; Edgardo Gazcon of Telemundo’s KESQ in Palm Springs; and Kent Kay of KESQ in Palm Springs and KTNV in Las Vegas.

One journalist was named to NATAS’ Gold Circle, recognizing 50 years of television excellence: Lee Swanson of San Diego’s KGTV.
