Multi-sensory meditation space coming soon to Birch Aquarium

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Imagine being underwater, listening to ambient sounds of the reef, and breathing in and out as you float with the rhythm of the ocean.

A new creative installation at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is meant to give guests a similar experience.

The exhibit, Meditation Ocean: Aquarius Reef Base, is designed as a multi-sensory meditation space inspired by life under the ocean, according to the aquarium.

Created by artist Hope Ginsburg and a group of artists, writers, divers and scientists collectively called the Mediation Ocean Constellation, it is meant to give people a unique look at the underwater research station of the Aquarius Reef Base and experience life as an aquanaut.

The installation includes projections filmed at the original platform, allowing guests to step inside a recreation of the aquanauts’ living quarters and to explore underwater simulations.

People can also watch a video that was shot over four days in Biscayne National Park in the Florida Keys, showcasing the work of eight meditating scuba divers. The experience invites guests to join the divers in meditation through pre-recorded scripts as they “breathe” with ocean wildlife.

Mediation Ocean: Aquarius Reef Base replaces the exhibit, Embodied Pacific: Ocean Unseen, and is included with general admission to the aquarium. The exhibit officially opens in November.
