MSP among airports reducing capacity in wake of shutdown

MSP Airport is among 40 airports around the country set to reduce flight capacity in the wake of the ongoing government shutdown. “FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the restrictions will go into effect Friday morning, and when fully implemented will result in a 10% reduction in capacity,” reports Bring Me the News.

State Senator Sandy Pappas — a DFL-er from St. Paul — is retiring from the Legislature after 42 years, “[making] her the longest-serving current lawmaker in the state Legislature,” MPR News reports. “Pappas is the chair of the Senate committee that crafts construction projects bills. She has also been Senate president and has a long list of laws to her credit.”

The number of international students enrolled at the University of Minnesota has remained relatively stable this year, but Sahan Journal reports that the number of new international students from India declined by 27% following visa changes. “University officials and alumni say that if the trend continues, it could mean not only fewer Indian international students in Minnesota, but less innovation and economic growth.”

A new MnDOT road project is upsetting land owners in rural Dakota County. “Miranda Sieh reached out to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS after she said MnDOT told homeowners they intend to buy 17 feet of land on each side of Highway 50 as part of a safety improvement project. If homeowners don’t sell, they say the state could take the land through eminent domain.”

According to the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA), voters approved over 60% of referendums asking for increased funding for schools across the state, Fox 9 reports. “According to the MSBA, districts have become more dependent on referendums than in the past.”
