At a time when political discourse in the U.S. faces a range of threats, MinnPost is dedicated to convening Minnesotans and encouraging the type of civic engagement that will help our communities move forward.
Community Voices has long been an important piece of MinnPost’s independent, nonprofit newsroom. Beyond the in-depth and explanatory journalism produced by our reporters and freelancers, MinnPost readers have embraced the commentary and opinion pieces written by their fellow Minnesotans – everyone from MinnPost readers to community leaders to, occasionally, elected officials.
We’re excited to continue this tradition of showcasing a variety of viewpoints on our Community Voices page with the help of a local opinion journalism veteran: Scott Gillespie.

Since retiring as the Star Tribune’s vice president and editorial page editor in 2024, Scott has worked in part-time editing roles, including helping MinnPost cover some editing needs over the past year as we have rapidly expanded our newsroom (more on that here). He will now dedicate his part-time role at MinnPost to helping us further develop Community Voices into a town square for thoughtful commentary on news and events shaping our community.
To that end, we’ve updated our submission guidelines and will be reaching out to people across the state to encourage them to join the conversation. While our initial focus will continue to be full-length commentary pieces posted daily and shared in our daily newsletter, we’re exploring ways to add more voices to the discussion through shorter pieces and, yes, by revisiting comments in a limited way.
This is a great time for readers to weigh in on what they’d like to see on our Community Voices page. While we still have limited capacity, we’re excited to explore possibilities with our readers and equip them to not only read widely and deeply, but to also get involved. If you’d like to pass along ideas for Community Voices, you can send them to voices@minnpost.com.
