MinnPost’s long-time mental health and addiction columnist Andy Steiner has been named a Pulitzer Center 2025 StoryReach Midwest Fellow. She joins six other journalists paired with local newsrooms who will dedicate the next year to telling “urgent, deeply reported stories impacting communities in the U.S. Midwest.”
Steiner’s work as a part of this fellowship will focus on the disruption in Minnesota substance use treatment due to proposed and actual changes to state and federal funding, as well as shifts in addiction treatment philosophies spurred in part by new federal priorities. She will dive into how these changes affect individuals, families and communities, including in rural parts of the state.
Steiner has been MinnPost’s mental health & addiction columnist since 2014. Her work puts a human face on mental health and addiction struggles and shines light on the relentless work throughout Minnesota to find solutions. She previously worked as an editor at Utne Reader and the Minnesota Women’s Press. Her writing has been published in local and national publications including Ms., Glamour, Self, AARP The Magazine and the Toronto Sun. She is the author of four books on topics including breastfeeding, everyday resilience, and girls and women in sports.
