SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A middle school in San Diego’s Chollas View community has broken ground on a new lab facility focused on environmental and climate science education.
During a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, San Diego Unified School District leaders joined students from Millennial Tech Middle (MTM) School and Lincoln High School to mark the beginning of the project.
The middle school is building a new Science, Technology, Engineer, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Climate Action Design Lab. It is described as an extension to the school’s existing Earthlab, an outdoor classroom and living lab.
The new facility will feature two lab rooms, an outdoor atrium and other support spaces, the district stated.
In addition, the construction on the STEAM Climate Action Design Lab will incorporate a student services facility with a gymnasium, multipurpose building, playfield and much more.
After its completion, which is slated for late 2027, the lab will continue the middle school’s partnerships with Groundwork San Diego and UC San Diego’s Center on Global Justice, the district said.
Groundwork partners with six additional schools in the area, including Lincoln High School and Johnson, Encanto, Webster, Horton, and Chollas Mead elementary schools.
“This partnership is so crucial to teaching Lincoln cluster students lifelong skills that can encourage them to become leaders in climate action,” said Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, a Board of Education trustee.
Funding for the project was made available through local bond funds passed by voters to improve San Diego Unified schools.
