The Miami-Dade Tax Collector’s Office is continuing its crackdown on fraudulent disabled parking permits in the county.
County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez announced last month that his office was working with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to audit every disabled parking permit and temporary disabled parking permit application filed within the last 24 months.
“Widespread abuse has harmed seniors, veterans, and residents with legitimate mobility disabilities. A system created to protect the most vulnerable has been exploited for too long. That ends now,” Fernandez said in a news release last month.
Fernandez said the department would be working to identify violators and said all fraudulent permits identified through the audit would be revoked without exception.
On Thursday, Fernandez said his office has started to send letters to anyone with a fraudulently obtained or improperly issued disabled parking permit that it had been revoked.
“Your parking permit(s) have been cancelled and are no longer valid. In addition, you may also be prohibited from obtaining a disabled persons parking permit for a period of four (4) years,” the letters read. “Continued use of the parking permit in your possession may result in up to one year in jail or a fine of $1,000, or both.”
Fernandez said audits are ongoing and some cases will be referred for prosecution where appropriate.
