Measure C secures funding for San Diego Convention Center expansion

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — It’s been a five-year wait, but the City of San Diego will finally have access to the increased hotel tax money approved by voters in favor of Measure C.

The measure was originally on the 2020 ballot. This week, the Court of Appeals upheld a judgment declaring that the measure was a Citizen Initiative, requiring only a simple majority to pass.

The ballot measure aims to tax local hotels more heavily, with the proceeds going towards funding a Convention Center expansion.

“A huge victory, not for myself but for our city. Investment in our Convention Center is good for our local economy, it creates jobs,” Mayor Todd Gloria said on Good Morning San Diego Thursday.

The legal wrangling over a Citizen Initiative versus Legislative Referral (and the threshold required to pass them into law) appears to be over. Which means the Mayor can now start using those funds for Convention Center repairs, street repairs and homelessness issues.
