SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Market 32 and Price Chopper announced on Monday that their stores will be providing discounts and food assistance programs amid the current government shutdown and suspension of SNAP benefits. Numerous grocery items will have limited-time prices in an effort to offer support to Capital Region families.
Nearly 30 items will be discounted through November 8. The sale will feature the following products:
- Large white dozen of Grade A eggs – $1.49
- PICS Brand pasta select varieties – $1
- Buy one, get one free on Market 32 bone-in split chicken breasts
- Red or green grapes, 2 pound package – $5
- Buy one, get two free on Thomas’ English Muffins
- Buy one, get one free on Quaker Instant Oatmeal, General Mills and Kellogg’s large size cereal
“Lots of families across the six states we serve are having a hard time making ends meet, especially now. We’re determined to do our part to help,” Market 32 and Price Chopper president Blaine Bringhurst stated. “Grocery stores are at the heart of a complex food system that families, farmers, food producers and food banks all rely on. It comes with great responsibility – one we take to heart – which is why we’re mobilizing resources and partners to provide some relief, support and stability.”
All 129 Market 32 and Price Chopper stores will also be hosting their “Fill a Plate with Hope for the Holidays” drive through January 3. Customers can buy and donate a pre-packed $10 bag of groceries and essentials that will be provided to local food banks and pantries. For every four bags purchased, the grocery store chain will donate a fifth bag of groceries to local organizations, up to 10,000 bags.
“The local needs are urgent right now—but sadly food insecurity is not a new challenge for our communities. Because we’ve been working on this issue for so long, we have the right partners in place to mobilize a fast response,” Bringhurst said. “We are grateful to our customers and community partners for their generosity in joining us to fight hunger and make sure every family has enough to eat.”
The new initiatives will coincide with Market 32 and Price Chopper’s Fresh Recovery program, which facilitates daily donations of fresh, unsold food, and is in addition to a recent $10,000 contribution from the company toward the United Way of the Greater Capital Region’s Government Shutdown Relief Fund.
